Bringing in my 30th birthday like yeeoooooowwwwww!!!!

When I became unwell with ME/CFS aka Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (nearly 4 years ago), life as I knew it was no more and I was fighting for my health like I never knew I would have too. Fast forward to now and after a few years spent bed/ house bound, I am now pretty much well enough to live an active life at my normal pace.

So bringing in my up and coming 30th birthday with a bang, sounded like the only way to bring in a milestone birthday.

I’ve been pining over Machu Picchu, it’s the one thing that I have held onto and told myself I would do once I recovered from ME/CFS. I have hoped and planned to get there this year, the year I turned 30 and fortunately my hard work with my health has paid off. After months of planning, tantrums, talking myself out of it, then talking myself back into it.  I can confirm that myself and darling husband (bless him for putting up with this decision making process) booked for my birthday and recovery dream of course. My much awaited trip to Machu Picchu, in less than 5 months time!

Whoohoo, I am literally pinching myself!!!

Lets embrace adventure! My big goal is happening, so I am one happy lady. But come the day I turned 30 and the adventure didn’t stop there. Cameron took on board that adventure was on the cards, so he organised for us along with my younger brother to go canyoning.

Ummmmm……what’s canyoning? Yeh I had no idea! Let me tell you…….

Canyoning is an adventure sport where you endure a mixture of activities like abseiling, hiking, rock climbing, rock sliding and jumping through a water canyon.

Sounds a little extreme, climbing down waterfalls, jumping off rocks and plunging into fresh water holes and sliding down big rock surfaces!

Extreme? Maybe a little…..but fun? Absolutely!

We went with a Sydney based tour group called Eagle Rock adventures, they were wonderful guides. They fed us, were extremely helpful and kindly took a bunch of photos on our behalf as smartphones weren’t really ideal to take.

The canyon we ventured through was located in the Macquarie pass rain forest.  It was absolutely beautiful. I love rain forests and getting amongst nature is always good for the soul. We also saw bit of wildlife where we went, as we were off the beaten track. We saw a wallaby, huge lizards, frogs and a snake that was happily hanging out near the water keeping a close eye on us.

This adventure was an all day event, the weather was super hot, but the rain forest kept us nice and cool. The water was beautiful and fresh, I could have stayed in it all day.

I can honestly say it was so much fun, challenging and rewarding all at the same time. There’s nothing like staring down the rock face and feeling your heart racing as you think to yourself “OMG what the hell am I doing?! “This s**t’s way too high!”

Your adrenaline kicks in and then you start abseiling down the rock surface like a boss (or what you think’s like a boss). You’re only going snail pace, but hey your giving it a go and YOU’RE DOING IT and that’s all that matters my friends!!!

With that my friends, I will love and leave you. If you want to check out our Canyoning footage, check out the link below. GoPro was worn by Cameron!

Bye for now and embrace your inner adventure!!

Road Trippin

Eden Wharf, NSW.

Eden Wharf, NSW.

Over the  long weekend, the Mr and I decided to road trip down to Melbourne.  I was pretty excited about the roadie, though after a full on week I was also a little concerned as to how I would pull up. I wasn’t planning to take time off for the trip but long journeys can tend to wipe me out. After a good night’s sleep I still felt a bit exhausted, mentally and psychically. However after a little pep talk and the realisation that it would probably still be good for me to get away, I got myself sorted and we were good to go. We also had Mr spoon joining us (for more about Mr Spoon click here), he had arrived into my possession only a couple of days earlier from his previous road trip (he gets around).

Our journey went via the scenic route, cruising down the coast of NSW stopping in Eden for the first night (the bottom of NSW). Keeping an eye out at Eden for whales while enjoying the gorgeous views. What I love about Australia is that there are so many beautiful coastal towns, each one just as gorgeous as the next.

We then headed down to Victoria hugging the coast as much as possible enjoying the beautiful national parks along the way, I love a good national park. We stopped off at a couple of spots along the way and enjoyed a nice walk and then ended the day in Yanakie, which borders Wilson’s Promontory National Park. The next day involved exploring Wilson’s Promontory National Park and enjoying another lovely walk. We also got to drive on the most southern road on mainland Australia. After a bit of National park exploring, we headed to Melbourne, cruising through rural Victoria and ending my part of the trip in Melbourne. Rural Victoria, the Gippsland region reminded me a lot like where i’m from in New Zealand, loads of sheep, cows, farmland and  lush green grass.  All up a total distance of driving  was just over 1100 km (not by me of course)!

Some delicious food was eaten and I think those country Victorians definitely give Melbournians a good run for their money when it comes to good food. I sensed there was a bit of competition in that area.

After spending a lovely night in Melbourne and conquering the square glass floor up the Eurka tower (it’s one way to test my fear of heights), I flew home the next day and managed everything just fine. It’s moment’s like this, that remind me that only not too long ago I wouldn’t have been able manage any of this, mentally, emotionally or physically!

Wowee it feels good to be living life and enjoying the simple things! Bring on life!

Sending lots of love and positive vibes to you all, do you have a road trip planned anytime soon? I’d love to hear about it!

Much love,

Birthdays & Anniversaries always call for celebrating! This year Cameron & I decided to go away to celebrate our 2nd Wedding anniversary & our birthdays. They all fall within 3 weeks of each other, fun times right!!! We thought what better way to celebrate, than to chill out at Australia’s beautiful Byron Bay!

Byron Bay is Australia’s most easterly point, filled with beautiful beaches. The food choice is amazingly healthy and yummy. Byron is filled with backpackers, hippies, surfers and green lovers. The vibe of Byron is very chilled, are you feeling the vibe yet?

I’ve had a little anxiety of flying since I’ve been unwell. Byron seemed like the best choice to test out a flight. It’s only an hour long flight from Sydney. I can assure you I nailed it & there is no more anxiety towards flying.

Up in Byron the weather was beautiful and warm. I felt like we were on a island. The vibe was refreshing and relaxing. The food was amazing and so was the shopping. We hired a car and went on a few roadies, even visited Nimbin! The unique place that is pretty much dedicated to promoting marijuana. Before you get excited it’s no Amsterdam and still not legal.

Cameron did a skydive, I was more than happy to watch. I don’t think my energy levels would have tolerated that much excitement. I was grateful for what I was able to manage energy wise, which was a lot.

I’ll leave you all with some pictures of our trip, I hope you enjoy! If you’re thinking about visiting Byron Bay, I would highly recommend it. It’s like a whole different world!

Hello Health & Hello 2015!

Hello lovelies! I hope your all well and enjoying this fabulous year of 2015 that is now upon us!
It has been a while since I have posted any updates… brace yourselves, here it all is.

It’s been pretty smooth sailing for me, Ive actually turned up a gear since November and I keep on going up at the moment.
Which is fantastic!
I have had a bit on as well and have managed it all quite well!

Whoohoo!

Much of November I spent buckled down studying hard for my exams. I had started attending Yoga classes which was really exciting and managed over half of the class! Snow bear has been getting regular walks by me and not 10 minute walks either I’m talking 20 – 40 minute walks! I completed and passed all of my assignments, but I had a lot of study to catch up on. A plan was also set and put into place for me to return back to work in January. I know scary stuff right?

Exams were over by the beginning of December and unfortunately I didn’t pass them. I was a bit upset but reminded myself that I had done really well considering my situation. The day of my last exam my lovely in-laws arrived over from New Zealand. It was 10 days of being out and about with them! We stayed up in Sydney and hit the shopping malls, my step counter was getting a real workout! I can’t believe it but I smashed out over 13,000 steps in one day! I had a few rest days in between going out, shopping and being out and about. I was able to re-sit my exams in-between my in-laws leaving and going down the coast on holiday with the family. I successfully passed my exams! Whoohoo, time to relax!

Our holiday with the family down the South Coast was lovely. Christmas was spent down there and it couldn’t have been any more relaxing. Most of our time was spent swimming, walking the dogs, kayaking, paddle boarding, a tad of shopping and relaxing. After our holiday I had a well-rested week back at home, with a few day trips as well as spending some down time at the beach. I bought the New year in with my good friend Laura & darling husband Cameron. We spent it down at the beach watching the fireworks! I must admit that I was pretty excited to bring in the New Year. I’m excited to see what lies ahead in the year for me, it can only keep on getting better!

I have re-enrolled to study and am currently enjoying my holiday from it. I’ve got lots of excitement in the next few weeks ahead, I’m starting back at work, heading up to Byron bay on a plane!! Whoohoo! As well as celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary, plus Cameron & I both have our birthdays coming up!

So there’s lots to celebrate and look forward in Lennae’s world! I have lots of exciting plans and goals for the year ahead. I hope you all have a fantastic year and are excited about 2015 as much as I am!

Studying with ME/CFS

Hello beautiful people! I apologize for being a bit absent lately. I have been extremely busy being a student. I thought I might share with you all how studying is going for me so far.

As some of you know I am studying a diploma in Nutritional Medicine. I am currently half way through the first semester and have started my first set of exams and assessments for each subject, it’s a bit scary. For the term I’m studying four subjects, which isn’t too bad considering some days I may not be well enough to study. I got a shock when I realised two of the subjects I had to study where “Biochemistry” and “Anatomy & physiology”! Ah science and I do not go well! Of course I had panic attack, but I’m up for the challenge!

Three weeks in and I was struggling to get a routine going. I’m not proud but there were tantrums thrown. My brain was not handling the information overload from biochemistry and anatomy & physiology, who knew you needed to know all of this information. I called my special assistance adviser at the college. I was allocated a go too person for extra support if I need it because of my illness. I told her I was struggling with those subjects. She assured me not to worry, she teaches those subjects herself and the majority of students struggle with these subjects. I felt reassured after our chat.

The past few weeks have been challenging, but it is also challenge for other students as well. Being an online student we have weekly forums, this is how the students and teachers communicate. I have posted on the forums with questions about things I’m not sure about or if I’m not quite understanding parts. Other students have commented explaining they feel the same way, which is good to know that I’m not the only one.

I have now managed to get a bit of a routine going and have come up with some tips that will definitely help anybody else who is studying with an illness.

Work at a desk. My first week of study was on the couch, my back seized up and it was off to the chiropractor to get clicked. A good desk and chair will definitely help.

30 Minute stretch breaks. Every 30 minutes I get up and stretch. I found stretches online that people do when they are sitting at a desk all day. It’s a good idea to get movement and to get out of your chair. It’s also a good break if you have a short attention span.

Routine. Find a routine that works for you.

Ask for help.
If you are having trouble understanding something ask someone for help. It can be anyone, a loved one, family member, a friend, your teacher, or a fellow student. They may know your answer or are willing to help you find the answer.

Spread your study out. I was trying to cram my study all in, I struggled to take in all the information and was left feeling exhausted. I quickly realised I have all week to spread it out and do what I can, when I can.

Plan. Plan your study out, mark down all the important dates that you have assignments and exams due. It helps especially if you need time to prepare for them.

You can do it! Yes you can! Keep trying and don’t give into self-doubt.

It is too early to say how I’m going with this term, I will have a good idea once I have completed the mid-term exams and assessments. I sat my first exam over the weekend and passed! WHOOOHOOO! I’m extremely proud of this result. I have found it challenging trying to balance studying as well as my daily routine on top of ME/CFS. This positive result was just what I needed!

Are you thinking about studying? or are currently studying? What are some of your study tips that help you? I would love to hear about them.

Bye for now

Hard times don’t last!

“Nothing is permanent not even our troubles.”

Have you ever had that feeling, where you feel like you could burst or cry from excitement? I’ve got that feeling and it’s taken what feels like forever to feel like that again!

I am well and truly getting better. “Hello world, I’m back!”
I am super excited to become a part time student and will be studying a diploma in Nutritional Medicine. That means I will become a Nutritionist once I’ve finished! This is my dream job! If you had told me this would be happening a year ago, I would have been completely upset as there was no way. Dreams of living an active life were impossible. Now I feel like anything is possible I’m out and about every couple of days and not paying too much for it!

Before I got sick Cameron and I were saving our money furiously to buy our first home. When I got sick this goal was still in our sights but I’ll be honest I became terrified about buying a house. We spent a lot of time and effort to make this goal happen, only to be knocked back. We were right at the point of going through the purchasing process. It was devastating! All that time, effort and energy we had put in for a negative result. Unfortunately it was out of our control. It was just not meant to be at this point of our lives.

Re-focusing on the positives we poured our energy into other goals that had been side lined. Since then Cameron has started up his own business as an electrician and I will now be a student! These goals would have been much harder for us to achieve whilst having a mortgage. At the time it was upsetting but now I’m glad that it happened.

Dealing with my illness at the beginning I felt like my life was over. Now I see it as an obstacle pointing me into a new direction. Everything happens for a reason. I may not be able to control what happens, but I can control how I react! As Justice Crew would say Que Sera! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MDTCF1dp28

Bye for now
