Twin Pregnancy- Third Trimester Here We Go!

Just like that the weeks have gone by and I have entered the third trimester of my pregnancy. With any luck it won’t feel like forever, as I’m beginning to feel more exhausted and discomfort as the days go by. If these babes arrive true to a twin pregnancy, then I will have no more than 9 weeks to go!

Overall I’ve pulled up well during the second trimester and can’t really complain….I mean there’s been the standard heartburn, fatigue, aches and pains here and there (a bit more frequent now), usually when the babies are changing position, leg cramps, lack of sleep, carrying a ton of weight from two babies, but  hey……its only temporary!

Within a few weeks my energy levels have changed a lot and I’ve had to scale back on how I spend my days. Being on my feet for too long is a struggle, even being out and about can be hard at times. Yoga, walks and pretty much any physical activity is now in the too hard basket. Although I can still pick up my daughter most of the time.  My little lady and I have discovered new ways to enjoy our one on one time together. It  has been nice to do, as we have always been out and about or doing active things. When her Dada is home or she is at her daycare, its my cue to REST, REST, REST!

It took a while for it to really sink in, but a few weeks ago it actually hit me how limited my movements had become. My little lady and I were out at our local library and I had been given orders to pick out some books, while she sat on her throne patiently.  While bending down to look at a few options, it felt very awkward and I was struggling to stay balanced. I literally had to stop myself from falling face forward.  Struggling to get back up, I figured maybe I’d just look for books on the top shelves from now on, I’m sure my little lady wouldn’t know any different.

Now that I’ve reached the home stretch of the pregnancy (third trimester) things start to get a bit more busy, interesting and exhausting!  I have regular appointments at the local hospital and with my midwife as well as regular scans, plus whatever else gets thrown my way.  The hospital tend to take over with the last part of a multiple pregnancy, as they can keep a closer eye on things and assess whether or not they need to intervene early or allow things to happen naturally.

I had my first visit to the hospital a few weeks ago and all seemed to go well. Although to my horror I was made to jump on the scales (cry). The obstetrician seemed optimistic and happy with how things were going. She also mentioned that I could potentially carry up to 38 weeks plus, she even mentioned 40 WEEKS!!!

I was horrified, I thought that was a rare thing for twin pregnancies. She explained that based on the type of twins that I’m carrying  and how I have been, that it could be a possibility.  As long as the twins keep growing and things keep traveling along as they are, it could happen.  I took it onboard and accepted that babies come when they’re good and ready, but was totally not keen on going till 40 weeks. I sent an internal message to the babies, that they are more than welcome to stay put until 38 weeks but any longer would be a bit of a stretch. I hoped that the message was received and that they don’t intend on overstaying.

I have a few check ups over the next few weeks, where I’ll be able to see how everyone is traveling including myself.  I’m not sure if any of these check ups will help with the old hormones, I guess that’s where chocolate comes in!

I won’t sugar coat things, I’m starting feel like the pregnancy is becoming a lot more challenging. I would say its to be expected and have been reassured its all normal. Bring on the home stretch!  Plus toddlers aren’t they just little……..

Thanks for reading! 🙂
